— Walking a Fine Line for 40 Years
For
over 40 years of your life, an accident is the most likely way you
will die. Yet, more than half of all working Americans don't think
a workplace injury will happen to them, according to a study just
released by Missouri Employers Mutual Insurance (MEM). And the reality
is very different also. According to the National Safety Council,
in 2001, 3.9 million people, more than the population of North Dakota,
Montana, Wyoming and Nebraska combined experienced a disabling injury.
The MEM study also showed that nearly three out of four employees
admit they could be more safety conscious at work, and more than
95 percent say they should take a more proactive role in ensuring
that injuries don't happen.
What
a sobering thought for those employers who thought they were doing
a good job in motivating employees to be safe. You may want to reflect
on what you are doing to heighten your employee's safety awareness
and evaluate whether you are really holding your employees responsible
and accountable for their safety.
