2002 — Cylinder Pressure Regulator Basics
Many
compressed gas cylinders are filled with pressure in excess of 2000
pounds per square inch and for some applications, much higher. Proper
pressure regulator selection and use are essential to help avoid
the hazards associated with high pressure and physical properties
of the gases, themselves. Your welding supply distributor can recommend
the regulator best suited for your application.
Gas
regulators are designed for use within specific pressure ranges
and are fitted with components compatible with specific gases. Never
attempt to adapt and use a regulator for a gas or at a pressure
other than that for which it was designed. Prior to use, always
check the label, inlet and outlet fittings, and pressure ranges
of the high and low pressure gauges to ensure compatibility with
the intended gas and pressure.
Before
installing a regulator, inspect your equipment and the cylinder
valve for damage and cleanliness. DO NOT use equipment if you detect
oil, grease, or damaged parts, or if the inlet filter is missing
or dirty. Take it to a qualified repair station for cleaning or
repair. Oil or grease can burn violently in the presence of oxygen.
Most
cylinder regulators are equipped with a connection that forms a
metal-to-metal seal but some connections use washers. Do not tape
the threads or use pipe dope or similar materials.
Connect
the regulator to the cylinder with the cylinder valve between you
and the regulator, and the regulator perpendicular to your body
so you are facing the side of the regulator. Before opening the
cylinder valve, close the regulator by turning the regulator adjusting
screw counterclockwise. Resistance of the regulator's diaphragm
spring should no longer be felt. Always open cylinder valves slowly.
Your
manufacturer's operating manual is the best source of detailed information
for safe usage and for ensuring a long service life of your pressure
regulator.
