July,
2001 — Propane Cylinder Safety
Propane in cylinders is a flammable
gas under pressure that can form explosive mixtures with air. Always
observe the following safety precautions:
1. Keep children away
2. Do not breathe the gas.
3. Keep cylinders away from heat, flame and sparks.
4. Cylinder temperature should not exceed 125º F.
5. Close the cylinder valve after each use and when empty.
6. Secure cylinders to prevent them from falling.
7. Store and use propane cylinders in an upright position.
7. Connect regulator with a properly sized wrench – do not use
pliers.
8. After installation, check all connections leading to the burner
nozzles by applying soapy water to connections. Do not check for
leaks while the burners are lit.
9. Always turn the cylinder valve off after grill/heater burners
have been shut off.
10. Do not store or use cylinders indoors or in enclosed areas.
Always store and use with adequate ventilation.
11. Avoid transporting cylinders in automobiles, vans, truck cabs
or similar enclosed areas.
11. Keep the cylinder valve outlet plugged when not connected
for use.
12. Propane is heavier than air. Choose storage and use locations
carefully so that if a leak occurs, gas will not settle in a low-lying
area.
