Improper Uses of Gaseous Oxygen
Gaseous oxygen is often misused in the workplace and can result in serious injury and property damage. This is by no means a complete list, but identifies some of the improper uses that are particularly dangerous and must be strictly forbidden.
- Do not use oxygen for ventilation, cooling or cleaning in welding operations.
- Do not use oxygen to drive pneumatic tools.
- Do not use oxygen to inflate vehicle tires, rubber boats etc.
- Do not use oxygen to cool or refresh the air anywhere including confined spaces.
- Do not use oxygen to cool the person.
- Do not use oxygen for dusting workbenches, machinery and clothing.
- Do not use oxygen to start internal combustion engines.
- Do not use oxygen as a substitute for compressed air.
- Do not use oxygen to blow out pipelines.
Gaseous oxygen is colorless and odorless. It does not burn, but readily supports combustion of other substances. It is capable of reacting with most metals and organic materials. The rate of reaction varies with the material and other conditions. Refer to your Material Safety Data Sheet for complete properties and other specific hazards of gaseous oxygen.
