April,
2002 - Facility Security
Compressed
gases have varying hazards; they may be extremely toxic, flammable,
reactive, pyrophoric, or they may greatly enhance combustion. Some
gases even exhibit combinations of these hazards.
After
the terrorists attack of September 11, the U.S. Government and trade
associations issued a flurry of bulletins and advisories for facility
and transportation security, especially to companies who manufacture,
warehouse, or ship hazardous materials. In addition to the possible
use in terrorist activities, compressed gases are frequently stolen
from jobsites, loading docks and other customer storage locations
for illegal drug use or even for their intended purpose.
Facility
security suggestions abound on the World Wide Web, especially on
Government sites such as OSHA ( www.osha.gov ) and DOT ( www.dot.gov
). In addition to the suggestions offered at these websites, consider
the following:
1.
Store compressed gas cylinders under lock and key or where they
are in plain view of workers.
2. When cylinders are not being used for an appreciable period of
time, put them back into storage.
3. Post a list of designated individuals allowed to retrieve cylinders
from storage and instruct employees to notify a supervisor if anyone
else is seen removing cylinders from the area.
4. Maintain an inventory of cylinders on hand and reconcile the
inventory frequently. If your cylinders are supplied by your gas
distributor, report any discrepancies.
5. Know your vendor s drivers and salespeople. Don t allow unescorted
strangers access to your facility or jobsite.
6. If you transport cylinders, always leave unattended vehicles
locked and within view of the driver or other responsible person.

information is offered by the National Welding Supply Association
and your local distributor as general guidance only and may
